Tommy Liu is a PhD student currently studying in the Inflammation Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne. He completed his Masters degree at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, Wellington. His PhD research project is focused on the role of cartilage resident cells, chondrocytes, during both inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. An often-overlooked cell type within the joint, his research aims to answer fundamental questions in chondrocyte biology; how are they contributing to inflammation, why are they overproducing enzymes that degrade the cartilage matrix and how they can be manipulated to repair and improve joint health.
